The “Pocket Flute”
An instrument that anyone can play.
No musical experience is necessary.

These flutes are made in the tradition of the Native American Flute.  They  are in the keys of "A" and "G" minor. The Native Americans, like many tribal cultures did not have a written music language. They developed instruments in such a way that all the notes harmonize with each other.  This configuration makes it possible to create sweet melodies without musical training.

In the Western culture we call this the minor pentatonic scale.  Penta is the Latin word for the number 5, which in this case represents the number of basic notes.

The following pages teach the basic techniques of playing this flute, provide the fingering charts and describe the care of the instrument.

Note:  To stay in the simple pentatonic scale on the 6-hole Pocket Flute, keep the 3rd hole from the mouthpiece covered (closed).
Care for the Flute
•    It is best to keep the flute out of direct sunlight. Having a flute cover is ideal.
•    Do not store the instrument in over heated locations such as a car.
•    To keep the flute from being damaged, avoid placing it on a chair, sofa, bed or floor.
•    If you wish to oil or refinish the flute, use a non toxic material, that you are willing to put your mouth on.
